New research reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
