This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but within Together exists a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
