The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
