A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
